The Walls Are Covered

March 6, 2009

John Rogers is having the Open House Reading & Writing Fair on March 11th, from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. All of the great art and writing done by student from Kindergarten through 5th Grade will be on display in the halls. As always, the Art Club work is on display on the wall outside of the nurse's office, across the hall from the Cafeteria. Come see all how talented we all are!

Warm vs. Cold

February 3, 2009

In chilly February, the 3rd-5th graders learned how to tell the difference between warm and cold colors in the color circle. After learning how to recognize the difference, the kids had to decide whether they wanted to use warmn or cold, without knowing what the project was.

Then, using the Flower paintings by Georgia O'Keefe as inspiration, students drew their own abstract flowers and colored them in their chosen color theme. All of the colors in each project stay in the warm or cold category, but each flower is dramatic and dynamic! See more of the flowers here.

Pish, Posh Hieronymous Bosch

January 20, 2009

Students were introduced to the art of the Dutch painter Hieronymous Bosch (~1450-1516). Bosch is famous for his very realistic yet very surreal pictures. They are full of fantastic creatures. Most of his paintings have a religious theme. He liked to show the contrast between heaven and hell and portray in all detail, what will happen to sinners in hell.

We read the book "Pish, Posh said Hieronymous Bosch" and took the pictures as inspiration in drawing our monsters. The students folded the paper and drew a profile line, which was copied onto the other side. Then they made those two profiles monsters. The space in-between is filled with a lovely face. Lots more of the faces are posted here.

Greenwood Space Travel Supply Co.

October 3, 2008

In a modest section of Greenwood Avenue, you will find the Greenwood Space and travel Co. It's a good place to know about, especially when planning your next intergalactic adventure. But if you keep walking, in the back you will find 826 Seattle. As it says on their website, "826 Seattle is a nonprofit writing center that helps students, ages 6 to 18, develop their creative and expository writing skills. We are dedicated to providing students with access to writing workshops, publishing projects, and one-on-one help with homework and English language learning — all free of charge.

Some of the great things happening at 826 Seattle include Drop-In Tutoring (free of charge) every Monday through Thursday from 3:00-6:00pm, throughout the year, based on the Seattle Public Schools calendar. They also offer free workshops (not all based on space travel) that are grouped by age, so sign up some friends and get inspired! They also post student work on their site as well as on YouTube. It's a great resource for kids who love to write or who need some help getting there.

Our First Art Club Meets and Makes Beautiful Things

This is a Flickr badge showing items in a set called John Rogers Art Club. Make your own badge here.

April 22, 2008

Today was the first meeting of the John Rogers Art Club. We had an outstanding turnout with about 60 kids! We learned about positive and negative space, and using paper, scissors and glue, we made some vibrant artwork. It was a simple project for our first meeting, but everyone had a great time and created some great work. We're all looking forward to more fun with art.

Room 2 Picassos On Exhibit at Black Cat Espresso

April 18, 2008

Room 2 has done some artwork inspired by Picasso's "Girl in a Mirror." The work was done using oil pastels, and is very colorful! It is one set in a series of art projects using work done by masters such as Seurat and Jacob Lawrence to explore different techniques to create beautiful images. Other techniques include pointillism and collage. You will be able to see all the artwork hanging in the school hallways. Be sure to stop by Black Cat Espresso and have a look at the many Picasso interpretations! They will be up for two weeks, and then followed by the Mondrian Inspired work from Mr. Clement's class.

Let us see your work!

Do you have some work that you'd like to send in and have published on the site? Leave it in the PTA mailbox (with a note attached with your name and classroom number) in the office and we will do our best to get it on the site!
