Jason works at an advertising agency making ads for very well-known clients, and spends his time away from work creating arresting pieces for himself.
When did you start creating art?
I started drawing at an early age. My mom always kept pens and paper in her purse so I could draw when we were out and about. I also enjoyed building things as well. I fell in love with Legos (which I still play with!) and also enjoyed creating things with modeling clay. My parents were always very supportive and encouraging with anything that involved art and creativity.
Why do you make art?
I make art to feel alive. To express myself. To try and make the world a better place in my own small way.
What role does art play in your job?
At my job I work with all different kinds of art and artists: writers, photographers, musicians, directors, designers, actors, and illustrators. Together we create TV commercials, billboards, print ads, etc. for clients who come to us to help them advertise their products and services.
Were you nervous to show your art to others? How did you overcome that?
Absolutely. Creativity comes from a profound and deep place within us all. In a sense it exposes parts of you in a way that you wouldn't normally do everyday. Sometimes those parts can be a little sensitive and uncomfortable to share. I was always afraid that people wouldn't like the art that I made. And because it came from a sensitive place I didn't want my feelings to be hurt if someone didn't like it. But at some point you have to realize that people just aren't going to like what you make sometimes - and that's okay. It's okay in the same way that you might like hamburgers and hate broccoli but the person sitting next you loves broccoli and hates hamburgers. People like different things and everyone is entitled to their opinion - there is no right or wrong answer. That's what makes the world such a unique place. And what makes art endless as well.
Where do you get your ideas and inspiration?
Music, movies, people, memories, photography, clouds, shadows, desert landscapes. There's already art everywhere you look - it's all around you. You just need to keep an open mind (even more so than an open eye).
Who is your favorite artist?
I have several. Mark Rothko, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Robert Motherwell to name a few.
Why do you think art is important?
It's what separates us from all other creatures. Art is human. Art is alive.
Is there some advice you have for young, aspiring artists?
Follow your heart, trust in your visions, and don't ever let anyone change the way you create something because they like it better another way.
